What to See in Mykonos: Town, Beaches and an Honest Island Route

Updated October 11, 2026 · 7 min read

Mykonos Town seen from a hillside: white houses, a windmill and the harbour with a cruise ship offshore

Mykonos is small on a map and awkward in practice. Chora is made for walking, the beaches are spread around the coast, and roads funnel traffic through a few busy junctions. A useful first visit therefore has three parts: a morning in Mykonos Town, one deliberately chosen beach, and either Ano Mera or an island circuit. Trying to collect every famous beach in one day mostly produces time in traffic.

Start in Chora, not at a beach club

The compact old town contains the windmills, Little Venice and Panagia Paraportiani within a walkable area. The pleasure is in the lanes between them, so a rigid landmark checklist misses the point. Go early if you want quieter photographs; return near sunset if atmosphere matters more than space. Little Venice and the windmills become crowded when cruise visitors and sunset crowds overlap.

The waterfront beside the Old Port is also useful orientation. Delos boats and some excursions use this side of town, while large ferries normally use the New Port at Tourlos. Never rely on the word “port” alone in a booking confirmation.

If you want context rather than directions, the Mykonos walking tour lasts two hours and starts at €36. It is a sensible first-morning choice, but unnecessary if you mainly want photographs and are happy to wander.

Choose one coast

Visit Greece describes at least twenty-five beaches around Mykonos. They are not interchangeable. Ornos and Platis Gialos are practical southern bases with services; Paradise and Super Paradise lean towards music and organised beach life; Kalo Livadi is broader and calmer in character. The north and east offer quieter places such as Agios Sostis, Fokos and Mersini, but Visit Greece notes that the northern beaches require private transport or a motorbike.

Wind changes the decision. Ftelia and Kalafatis appeal to windsurfers precisely because they are exposed. A still-looking photograph is not a promise of calm water on your date. Ask locally before committing to a remote coast, especially when the Meltemi is strong.

Add Ano Mera when you need contrast

Ano Mera is the inland counterweight to Chora. Its square and the Panagia Tourliani monastery give the day a village rhythm instead of another sequence of bars and sunbeds. The Farm, Ano Mera and beaches guided tour costs from €50, lasts four hours and is the most-reviewed island circuit in the current Mykonos selection. It works well for a short stay because transport and route choices are settled for you.

Independent travellers can make a similar outline by bus or vehicle, but not every quiet beach fits the bus network. If remote northern beaches are central to your plan, compare rental cars for Mykonos. Check the fuel policy, deposit, CDW and excess with the supplier before paying; none of those terms should be inferred from the headline price.

What belongs on another day

Delos is not a quick extra stop. The crossing is roughly 30 to 40 minutes each way, returns follow the operator’s schedule, and the archaeological site deserves time on foot. Treat it as a half-day visit or choose a longer Delos-and-Rhenia cruise. Our Delos tours from Mykonos page compares the current options.

Rhenia is different again: the point is swimming and time aboard, not a town to tour. Combining it with Delos creates a full boat day and leaves little energy for Chora afterwards.

A realistic first-day route

Walk Chora early, pause at the Old Port, then choose either a southern beach or Ano Mera and one coast. For most first-time visitors without their own transport, the four-hour Farm, Ano Mera and beaches tour is the cleanest overview. Keep Delos for a separate day, and do not plan an Old Port departure as though arriving at the New Port puts you at the same quay.
