Mykonos Without a Car: Bus, Walking or a Guided Tour?

Updated October 11, 2026 · 6 min read

Mykonos Town seen from a hillside: white houses, a windmill and the harbour with a cruise ship offshore

You do not need a car for a first visit centred on Chora, Delos and one or two popular beaches. You do need a plan. Mykonos buses connect the town with major beaches and Ano Mera, but they are not a hop-on island circuit and timetables change with the season.

What works well without driving

Explore Chora on foot. Its lanes are narrow, parking is awkward and the waterfront sights sit close together. The Old Port is also the departure area for many Delos and excursion boats. If your confirmation names the New Port at Tourlos, check the connection separately: KTEL currently publishes an Old Port–New Port bus, but the times are not a permanent promise.

The southern beach corridor is the easiest part of the island without a car. KTEL services commonly cover destinations such as Ornos, Platis Gialos, Paradise and Elia, while the exact network and frequency depend on the published timetable. Buy the correct ticket, identify the departure station and leave margin for a queue in high season.

Ano Mera is also reachable by bus. The village lies inland and gives you a useful contrast to Chora, but combining it with several scattered beaches by public transport quickly becomes inefficient.

Where the bus plan becomes weak

The quieter north and east are the problem. Visit Greece specifically notes that the northern beaches require private transport or a motorcycle. Agios Sostis, Fokos and Mersini are attractive precisely because they are less connected; choosing them means arranging a taxi, driving or accepting a limited day.

Do not assume that every named beach has a direct bus or that the return service runs late. Check the official KTEL timetable on the day, especially outside the main summer season. A taxi can solve one difficult leg, but availability at a remote beach is not something to improvise at sunset.

When a guided island circuit earns its price

The four-hour Farm, Ano Mera and beaches guided tour starts at €50. It is the most-reviewed island circuit in the current Mykonos selection and suits a short stay when you want village and coastal stops without coordinating several buses. It does not replace a full beach day, and a group route gives you less freedom than your own vehicle.

Compare that option on our Mykonos island tours page. For a day focused only on Chora and Delos, a tour vehicle adds little; use the Delos tour comparison instead.

If you still want to drive

A rental car is useful for early starts, northern beaches and a flexible loop, not for parking beside every Chora sight. Before booking, check the pickup location, fuel policy, deposit, CDW or full protection, excess and whether an additional driver costs extra. Road width and summer traffic matter more than the island’s small size.

Compare rental cars for Mykonos only after deciding that your itinerary actually needs one. For one town day and one organised excursion, buses and transfers are usually simpler.

A realistic car-free plan

Spend the first morning walking Chora and confirm your boat quay in person. Use one later day for a bus-served southern beach. Put Delos or a boat trip on a day with weather margin, and choose either Ano Mera by bus or an organised island circuit rather than trying to stitch both coasts together.

Mykonos without a car works best through deliberate limits: one area per half-day, official timetables checked close to travel and no assumption that a small island means short transfers.
