Mykonos Beaches: Busy South or Quiet North and East?
Updated October 11, 2026 · 5 min read
Choose the south coast when easy transport, facilities and a social atmosphere matter most. Choose the north or far east when space and landscape matter more than convenience. Mykonos has at least twenty-five beaches, according to Visit Greece, but they do not offer the same type of day.
The connected south
Ornos and Platis Gialos are practical bases: buses, places to eat and organised beach areas make them easier for a first visit. Psarou, Paraga, Paradise and Super Paradise become progressively more associated with music, beach clubs and spending. Elia is broad, while Kalo Livadi has a calmer family rhythm. None is automatically quiet merely because you arrive early in the season.
The advantage is predictability. You can reach many southern beaches without driving and have food, shade for hire and toilets nearby. The disadvantage is that a famous name does not guarantee a relaxed public patch of sand. Check what a booking includes before paying for a sunbed.
The Super Paradise Beach sunbed at Thalas Mykonos starts at €20 and is the most-reviewed Mykonos activity in the current selection. It secures a reserved lounger, not solitude or transport. Compare other formats under things to do in Mykonos.
The quieter north and east
Agios Sostis, Fokos and Mersini trade services for space. Visit Greece describes the northern beaches as quieter and says private transport or a motorcycle is required. That makes them poor choices for a tightly timed cruise day and good choices for travellers ready to carry water, confirm the road and arrange the return.
Kalafatis is exposed to the wind and known for windsurfing; Lia has coarser sand. Ftelia also attracts windsurfers rather than travellers seeking reliably flat water. “North” therefore does not simply mean peaceful swimming. Wind direction can make a beautiful beach the wrong choice on a particular day.
A better way to choose
Start with three questions: How will you return? Do you want music or quiet? What does the wind look like? Families usually value easy access, food and a manageable exit more than an isolated postcard view. Travellers seeking silence should accept fewer facilities and more transport planning.
If reaching remote beaches is the purpose of your day, compare rental cars for Mykonos after checking pickup, deposit, fuel policy, CDW or full protection and excess with the provider. Otherwise, a southern bus route or a guided Mykonos island tour is simpler.
Do not attempt five beaches. Pick one primary beach and one nearby fallback. The best Mykonos beach is the one whose access, wind and atmosphere suit your actual day, not the one with the loudest international name.
